BEATRICE, Neb. - It's quickly become one of the fastest-growing sports in the United States and the City of Beatrice is looking to contribute to that.
To do that, terrace seating will be installed at the Chautaqua Park Pickleball courts on the city's south side. The Beatrice City Council voted 8-0 in favor of accepting a bid for the project on Monday night. Lottman Excavating will undertake construction which is being funded through a grant, according to City Administrator Tobias Tempelmeyer.
"What we're looking at is the Pickleball Association has agreed to contribute about $8,000 to the project, Beatrice Plus has agreed to contribute $10,000 to the project and we're looking to use the RC/RP grant to cover the remaining $64,160 for this project," Tempelmeyer said.
The city was awarded $950,000 through the RC/RP grant, designed to improve playgrounds around Beatrice.
Tempelmeyer said the start date of the project is to be determined, but it should take about 45 days, with the hope of completion within the fiscal year.
According to USA Pickleball the sport ended 2024 as the fastest-growing for the fourth year in a row.
