BEATRICE – A home-grown soldier said more than 1.2 million people are defending the United States across the globe as Americans observed Memorial Day.

Sergeant First-Class Jerod Ideus, of Filley….told a Memorial Day observance at Evergreen Home Cemetery the modern military is adapting in providing that defense.

"As our operational environment has changed over the years, we continue to innovate...experiment...and invest in emerging technology...to stay ahead of our adversaries. We are always prepared to fight and win our nation's wars."

Ideus, with the Joint Force Headquarters Command Group in Lincoln, said the nation remembers those who never came home, and are remembered every day by their families and friends and those who served alongside them.

"Memorial Day is not only a day of rememberance. It is presence, and opportunity for reflection and renewal. It prompts us to consider the selflessness of the men and women, who proudly serve. So let us honor the legacy of our fallen comrades, by living our lives with courage and integrity, compassion....and by striving each day to make our world a better place."

Ideus paid tribute to gold star military families. "Allow me to express my appreciation to you, on behalf of all those present today and on behalf of our country. We are humbled by your sacrifice, inspired by your resilience, and grateful for your continued service to your community."

Despite cool weather with the threat of rain, the ceremony went forward outdoors at the Veterans Section of the cemetery at the east edge of Beatrice. Marine Veteran Tim Fralin led the ceremony, with participation by representatives of Veterans Organizations, the American Legion Riders and the Beatrice Community Concert Band.
