Tornadoes develop from storms across Kansas, Nebraska

Flooding from heavy rain in south central Nebraska through early Monday morning

BEATRICE – Tornadoes were reported in Nebraska and Kansas with storms moving north to northeast last night.

One twister was spotted by an off-duty National Weather Service official near the village of Max, in southwest Nebraska.  A few minutes later after seven p.m. power lines were reported down north of Stratton….and about a half-hour later, damage from a tornado was reported north of Hayes Center.

Between 5 and 5:30 p.m., damage to a building and a homestead was reported near St. Francis, Kansas…in the northwest corner of the state.

Just before 7 p.m., emergency management reported the town of Grinnell, Kansas along Interstate 70 was damaged by a tornado, that a storm chaser had tracked minutes earlier near the town of Gove….also in northwest Kansas.  Damage to homes, buildings and vehicles occurred in Grinnell.  Authorities also shut down a section of Interstate 70.

About eight reports of tornadoes were received in southwest and central Kansas, including one live-streamed by a television station near the town of Kinsley.   A home was destroyed and power lines were downed by a large tornado reported southwest of Plevna…..or just west of Hutchinson, Kansas.

There was no immediate report of any injuries in the tornadoes reported in Nebraska or Kansas.

A flood warning was issued until 9 a.m., Monday.....for Clay, Fillmore, Nuckolls, Thayer and Webster Counties in south-central Nebraska....and for Jewell and Smith Counties in north-central Kansas.  Two to six inches of rain was reported across those areas, Sunday night.

More severe weather could break out Monday, with the eastern half of Kansas included in an enhanced risk designation for high winds, possible tornadoes and hail.  That enhanced risk area includes part of southeast Nebraska.
