'Be patient': Warm spring weather not necessarily a green light for plants, flowers
BEATRICE, Neb. - Warm weather, sunshine, and near summer like conditions are on tap for several days for much of Nebraska, giving some the itch to get out in the garden.
While those summer like temperatures might feel nice during the day, cool nights and chilly mornings can lead to problems for those planting early. Alex Eckhoff owns Envision Landscapes in Beatrice and recommends patience.
“We’ve had a lot of people getting that urge, that spring fever,” Eckhoff said. “Annuals I would kind of pump the breaks on, but if you do paint them I’d make sure you cover them when it gets cooler out”
Eckhoff says most shrubs and trees are ready to be planted, but annuals like certain vegetables and flowers are susceptible to cold weather. While temperatures are going to reach the 80’s for much of the state, even Eckhoff and those at the store take their own precautions with their outdoor selection as sprig weather fluctuates.
“We’re going to see a lot of up and down so just be patient,” Eckhoff said. “That’s what we do here, we bring it up when it’s ready and when the season is ready… We just want to make sure it’s the right conditions and right time for everybody.”
Envision uses frost clothes and shade canopy’s to protect their outdoor items from cold weather. While covering plants is the most common way to provide cold weather protection, another method is a round of early morning watering.
“I get here ab out 5:45 every morning, start watering, you can do that early so the frost doesn’t set on the plant it kind of gets rid of it.”
