BEATRICE – The Gage County Board of Supervisors Wednesday signed off on the financing plan for a new solid waste landfill, southwest of Beatrice.

The plan to issue up to $16 million in revenue bonds was earlier approved by the Beatrice Area Solid Waste Agency Board and the Beatrice City Council.

Space is running short on the current landfill off South Sumner Street.  The new facility will be located south of the current landfill and West Locust Road.  The new area will be west of a construction and demolition waste site also operated by the city and Beatrice Area Solid Waste Agency.

The bonds for the project will be paid off by revenue from the operation, with the City of Beatrice property tax authority providing a backstop, if needed.

City officials are taking bids for the earth work and related construction, and for the addition of a building and scale for the new landfill….which is expected to have a 60-to-70 year lifespan.

Construction is expected to begin in 2025.   The landfill will serve the City of Beatrice, Gage County and surrounding rural areas and communities.
