Huskers stifle Jays, stun No. 14 Creighton
OMAHA, Neb. - You can call it an upset, you can call it a gritty win, you can call it what ever you like, but for the second straight contest in Omaha, Nebraska’s leaving with a win.
The Huskers knocked off #14 Creighton 74-63, never trailed, and went toe to toe with the Jays on the glass (37-37) and committed only seven turnovers. Fred Hoiberg said Nebraska what they had to do to avoid back to back losses.
“We weren’t going to come here and out finesse them, we weren’t going to come out here and be more pretty than Creighton, Coach Mac (McDermott) does as good a Joba s anyone in the country and puts those guys in a lot of positions to get shots,” Nebraska Head Coach Fred Hoiberg said. “We put in a lot fo things we thought they might run, especially from last year, and we went out and I thought we executed them.”
Nebraska held Creighton to 33% shooting and kept potential Player-of-the-Year candidate Ryan Kalkbrenner to just four points and one field goal attempt. For the second time in his career, Juwan Gary has defeated Nebraska’s in-state rival. He led Nebraska with 16 points and seven rebounds on Friday night.
“These games are always fun, playing a rival team, coming to Omaha, in Creighton’s gym,” Gary said. “I told the new guys just go out and enjoy it.”
Wisconsin transfer Connor Essegian also chipped in 15 points off the bench, but did it in a different way. The usual three-point threat worked at getting to the rim, as only three of his 15 came from beyond the arc.
“To be able to have that second option is good, and there were times I could have made a second pass even,” Essegian said. “Being able to go to the film and see that can add more to my game too.”
Nebraska improves to 4-1 with the win, while creighton drops their first of the season and fall to 4-1.
Nebraska is back at it on Wednesday hosting South Dakota, while the Jays take on San Diego State on Tuesday, an elite eight rematch from2 years ago.
