Raiola, skill position freshmen finding success in first half of the season
LINCOLN, NEB. - Nebraska’s offense continues to find success under freshman quarterback Dylan Raiola and it’s come with a mix of veteran experience and freshman skill.
Raiola has two veteran targets in wideouts Jahmal Banks and Isaiah Neyor, but his fellow freshman Carter Nelson and Jacory Barney Jr. have been big parts of the Husker game plan as well. Raiola says that’s important as they develop and improve together.
“It’s pivotal to have those live game reps with those guys,” Raiola said. “That’s only going to speed up the process of getting better for all off us. I think it’s the mentality we come out with in practice to prepare us for the game. When we come out for practice we make it as game like as possible so when it’s time for the game, it’s nothing new.”
Aside from Raiola, it’s been Jacory Barney Jr. seeing the most action out of that offensive freshman trio, as Barney has over 120 receiving yards on the year and has Nebraska’s second longest run play. Offensive coordinator Marcus Satterfield says talked more about what the speedy freshman brings o the offense.
“He’s like a kid at recess,” Satterfield said. “He loves the game, he has the natural ability of the movements and a natural instinct for the game. You literally can just talk to him say “go here, don this” and he’s able to visualize it and do it.”
Nebraska’s offense has 10 plays of 20 yards or more over the last two games, but face off with an undefeated Rutgers squad whose red zone defense is the best in the Big Ten.
Huskers and Scarlet Knights kick off at 3:00 p.m. CT on Saturday, on FS1.
