Fall camp: Huskers showing depth at running back
As Nebraska works through fall camp, one area of depth is the running back position.
LINCOLN, NEB. - As Nebraska works through fall camp, one area of depth is the running back position.
Last year, Nebraska's offense averaged 177 rushing yards per game. However, this year, between Gabe Ervin Jr. Oregon transfer Dante Dowdell, Rahmir Johnson, and Emmett Johnson Nebraska has options as to who runs the football.
Running backs coach EJ Barthel discussed the traits he factors into the decision of who gets what amount of reps.
"You're looking for big play ability, someone who can pound the football... get four yards in a cloud of dust and then the third part is protection," Barthel said. "Whether it's one person or three different people, that's what you need in that room for that 1-2-3."
Last year, Gabe Ervin Jr. saw his season cut short due to a season-ending dislocated hip, but he's ready to make an impact in 2024.
"I'm not taking each day for granted," Ervin Jr. said. "I'm living the dream, living the moment, putting forth my best every single day and putting in the effort to make an impact. Coming back was tough, but now I'm here."
Nebraska begins the season on Aug. 31 hosting UTEP
