Greg A. Hergott
Gregory (Greg) Arthur Hergott, 80, son of Twila Hergott Deger and Arthur (Dutch) Hergott, was born March 27, 1944, in Fairbury, Nebraska. Greg died August 3, 2024, at the age of 80.
Greg attended St. Michael’s Catholic Grade School and Fairbury High School, graduating in 1962. He attended Fairbury Junior College and college in Hawaii. It was in Hawaii that he discovered his love of sailing. He bought a boat and sailed around Hawaii and the coast of California and Mexico.
Greg had a variety of jobs including painting and repairing coast guard towers, water towers and church steeples and tree trimming services. He also owned and operated a food truck out of “The Satisfied Frog restaurant, at Cave Creek, Arizona. People enjoyed his signature “ribs on the run” catering services.
Greg moved back to Fairbury to continue taking care of his mother, Twila, until her death in 2002. Greg enjoyed hosting get togethers for family and friends. He loved to cook and at Thanksgiving would smoke turkeys for his friends and family. His family always enjoyed his homemade salsa. Greg loved hunting and fishing and his dream was to build a boat to sail again. He did get the boat built and then sold it to a man in Alaska in 2023.
Survivors include cousins Eleanor Preston of New Braunfels, TX, Betty Witulski of Beatrice, NE, Barbara Zarybnicky of Odell, NE, step-sisters Carla Deger of Ouray, CO, Barbara Rothwell of Beatrice, NE, step-brother Steve Deger of Fairbury.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Dutch and Twila Hergott Deger and step-brother Dana Deger.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Gerdes-Meyer Funeral Home is assisting with arrangements.
