JEFFERSON COUNTY, Neb. -- Last year, 17 people died or were injured in agriculture accidents across Nebraska.

That number came from the University of Nebraska Medical Center, which said all 17 involved people were adults.

That is why Jefferson County Farm Safety 4 Kids put together a Progressive Agriculture Safety Day.

“It’s really important for kids,” said Lana Likens, Director of Public Relations at Jefferson Community Health and Life. “It’s important for kids to learn about safety. Both Ag safety and all kinds of safety.”

They talked about all kinds of safety, from weather to PTO safety and electrical safety.

The goal. To make sure children understand the precautions needed to stay safe around dangerous equipment.

“Equipment is made with safety precautions and we need to make sure we are leaving those safety precautions in place,” said Likens.

With Jefferson County being an area fueled by agriculture, the event was aimed for all kids, not just kids who live on a farm.

“It is just important for all kids to have those kinds of safety precautions,” said Likens. “And maybe, particularly, for those kids who don’t grow up on a farm because they don’t work with dad on a daily basis and have dad say ‘stay away from the PTO.’”

Likens said everybody should be well-informed.

“We live in an Ag community. You might be around a piece of equipment that has a PTO and need to know how to handle that, and how to treat it, and not to get close to it because it might wrap your clothing up in it and you might lose an arm,” said Likens.
