BEATRICE, NEB. - Cats, dogs, and automobiles all filled the Gage County Fairgrounds on Wednesday afternoon.

The Beatrice Humane Society provided microchipping, distemper vaccinations, and rabies vaccinations in a drive thru, aimed at helping pets in the community.

“Microchipping is the number one way an animal can be recognized, in an effort to get them home,” Katelyn Davis, Veterinary Technician and Clinic Manager for the Beatrice Humane Society said. “Any animal control facility, humane society, veteran clinic has a microchip scanner and 90% of animals who have a microchip are provided to their primary owner.”

Katelyn Davis is the Veterinary Technician for the humane society and says the fairgrounds had a line of cars long before microchipping and vaccinations began. Vaccinations and microchipping was free of charge, outside of a free will donation. A grant was provided by Petco Love.

“They are the foundation who granted us a grant and donated the distemper vaccines for felines and canines,” Davis said. “As far as funding for the rabies, that’s coming out of our community fund. As people donate to this exact clinic, we can take that money to work on more clinics moving forward.”

Davis says one of the main goals of the clinic is to cut back on the number of stray dogs or cats in Nebraska’s communities.

“If we can keep animals either getting back home, a microchip is way more likely to get that animal home,” Davis said. “If we are getting animals vaccinated and creating education about low cost spay neuter, the fewer animals there are to run loose, the fewer puppies, and the greater quantity of animals can stay in a home.”
