BEATRICE – Beatrice Police have arrested an Omaha man for alleged possession of a deadly weapon by a prohibited person.

Police arrested 25-year-old Logan Evans Sunday, after a person came to the Beatrice Police Department to report a found firearm.   Police retrieved the loaded handgun from the person’s vehicle.

Interviewing three witnesses…one said that Evans occasionally stays in the basement of his residence.   One of the witnesses reported hearing a gunshot coming from the basement of his home Sunday, while he was making breakfast, at around 7 a.m.

Later, after returning home from church, two other witnesses and Logan were no longer at the home.  That’s when the firearm was observed, left on a bathroom sink counter.  It was then brought to the police department.

Authorities say according to other witnesses, Evans was known to own a firearm and allegedly got it in Omaha, for his protection.

Evans was arrested by Beatrice Police.  Records indicate he previously was convicted in Jefferson County of felony accessory to second-degree murder and to felony possession of methamphetamine in Gage County.

Evans was discharged from a more than three-year state prison term, in November, of 2023.  He had been arrested in July of 2019 by the Nebraska State Patrol, suspected of involvement in the killing of Marc Jarrell of Lincoln….whose body was found along a county road south of Endicott….near Fairbury.  Authorities had been investigating a reported homicide at Crystal Springs Campground, outside of Fairbury.

A then 25-year-old Odessa, Texas man, Jerry Gilbert, eventually led authorities to the victim’s body.  He was convicted and sentenced to 45-to-60 years in state prison for second-degree murder and using a firearm to commit a felony.

In all, five people were arrested in Jarrell’s death.
