FAIRBURY, Neb. -- Fairbury Public Schools put together a Soup It Up For Kids event at the Fairbury High School Thursday.
The event was aimed as a fundraiser to raise money for the food drive that the schools do to support families and students in need.
“It’s an annual fundraiser,” said Shannon Honold, Jefferson Intermediate Principal. “It has been going on for probably over 15 years. We use the funds that we make from the fundraiser to support our food market where we hand out food every month to families that need it.”
Volunteers from around town made soup that was put into a contest to be voted on.
Nicholas Georgi from the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, Jefferson Community Health and Life, Twin Rivers, the Fairbury Chamber of Commerce and others made soup to support the event.
This year, Fairbury Public Schools put the event during the week which Honold hopes will make for a good turnout.
“Last year, we had a kind of lower turnout,” Honold said. “We did it on a Saturday and it was bad weather because we had it during January. This year is the first time that we have done it during the week on a Thursday evening so we’re hoping that will help get a better turnout as well.”
This isn’t the first event that Fairbury Public Schools has put together to raise funds for families in need. Most recently, a “Light The Way” event from last month helped support families with rent and car repairs.
It shows the continuing drive to come together and support those in the community.
“I think we try to do everything we can to support our community and support our students,” Honold said. “We know that sometimes students and families struggle with food, especially with grocery prices that are increasing this year so we try to help out in anything we can give back with our food market or anything else we try to do."
The event was a success with many attendees from around the town coming and trying the soup.
