Staff member assaulted at state penitentiary

LINCOLN, Neb. -- A staff member at the Nebraska State Penitentiary was reportedly assaulted by an inmate on Saturday.

The Department of Correctional Services said an inmate was coming out of the shower and punched the staff member in the side of the head. The staff member then fell to the ground.

Officials said the inmate was removed from the area by responding staff members.

According to authorities, the injured staff member was taken to a nearby hospital and treated for a cheek bone fracture.

The investigation is ongoing.
