Fairbury local Mick Suey honored with Golden Wheel Award
FAIRBURY, Neb. -- Mick Suey was recognized for the Golden Wheel Award from the Fairbury Rotary Club.
Suey was recognized for his hard work in helping out the community through his many different projects and involvement.
“This last year, Rotary was one of the many donors to the Veterans Wall,” said Lana Likens, President of Fairbury Rotary. “That is one of Mick’s big projects that he has taken on through the museum and for the community. Plus when you add in that Mick has been a coach and a teacher in our community for almost 30 years, we felt like he really fit the criteria for the Golden Wheel.”
Suey is the president of the Fairbury City Museum, helps with the Fairbury Veterans Memorial and is a teacher.
He said his biggest passion is the Veterans Memorial.
“But I would say, more than anything, the Veterans memorial, which has been my passion since we came up with the idea a few years ago,” Suey said. “It continues to grow, just last week we added 40 more names to the wall.”
Suey received the award in Omaha with his family in attendance.
“I was humbled that night, in Omaha,” Suey said. “We were receiving the awards in Omaha and it was wonderful to have my family there to watch. Lana was there. It is just humbling. I don’t really know what else to add to that.”
Although Suey prefers to be behind the scenes, he was still recognized for helping the community.
“We feel like it is important to recognize people in our community who are doing good things because we have a great community and a great county,” Likens said. “We have a lot of great people and there are a lot of things going on to help people and our community and it is good to recognize that.
Suey joked around saying, it just gives him something to do, but he said he loves helping the community.
