Crash off gravel street in east Beatrice, injures five
BEATRICE - There were multiple injuries from a southeast Nebraska crash, Wednesday afternoon. A one-vehicle crash off South 19th Street in Beatrice Wednesday night sent five people to hospitals with injuries. Beatrice Police Sergeant Brian Carver says the Chrysler Sedan involved was traveling south on a gravel section of South 19th….about a half-mile south of the Beatrice YMCA.
"It looks like out of control, maybe overcorrected...entered the east ditch into a cornfield and struck a power pole."
Ambulance units from Beatrice Fire and Rescue and several police officers responded to the scene at 5:20 p.m. The five occupants suffered severe injuries.
"There were kids in the vehicle and outside of the vehicle. They crawled out on their own."
Carver said two occupants were taken by ground ambulance to Bryan West Health Center in Lincoln and three others to Beatrice Community Hospital.
Officials initially called for a medical helicopter, but canceled if because it would be coming from Omaha….a 45-minute trip.
The accident was about a quarter mile south of a recreational trail crossing, where South 19th is a gravel road. The car went off the east side of the road, hitting a power pole and breaking it….the car with major damage coming to rest in the edge of a cornfield.
Police were investigating factors that led to the accident. There was no immediate word on the identities of those involved, nor their conditions.
