LINCOLN, Neb. -- Lincoln Police arrested a man that reportedly used a machete to try and carjack a vehicle that was in the drive thru of a restaurant.

The Lincoln Police Department said officers were sent to the 2100 block of W O St. around 1:00 p.m. on Monday for a reported carjacking.

Officers said 28-year-old Gilberto Antoni Portillo Barrientos, of Lincoln, carjacked a vehicle using a machete. The vehicle was a construction van that reportedly had two people inside and was stopped in a drive thru of a local restaurant.

According to authorities, they were unable to find Barrientos for almost an hour. They reportedly received a call that said Barrientos was seen near the intersection of 27th St. and O St.

Officials said the Nebraska State Patrol used the AirWing helicopter to find the van and told officers where it was. Stop sticks were reportedly used to disable the van.

LPD said Barrientos got out of the van and ran off. The helicopter continued to follow him.

Police said they were able to arrest Barrientos in the 200 block of NW 22nd St. and found the machete in the van. There were no injuries reported.

According to authorities, Barrientos was lodged at the Lancaster County Jail and arrested for robbery.

The investigation is ongoing and anyone with information can contact LPD of Crime Stoppers.
