BEATRICE – Beatrice Firefighters were sent to Beatrice High School Thursday afternoon, following the smell of gas detected in the kitchen area of the building.

Students were being evacuated from the building following the 2:33 p.m. call which sent firefighters to the scene. Firefighters did not find any hazards immediately after their arrival, according to Southeast Communications dispatch traffic.

A Black Hills Energy crew was summoned and a minor problem was found that was causing the gas smell.   A fire captain says the odor apparently was caused by loose connections to a couple of kitchen appliances….and no significant concentration of gas was found in the building.  There was no break in any service line.

Students were allowed to return to the building about twenty minutes after the call reporting the gas smell.

Firefighters remained on scene until about 3:40 p.m., with the gas company crew handling the problem.
