Huskers rally to top Terps in overtime

LINCOLN, NE -- Derrick Walker scored 23 points and Keisei Tominaga added 20 as the Nebraska men's basketball team beat the Maryland Terrapins 70-66 at home Sunday.
NU was down eight with less than seven minutes remaining in regulation before Sam Hoiberg knocked down a three to ignited a 6-0 run that pulled Nebraska within two. Walker sent the game to overtime with a basket with 30 seconds left. In overtime, Hoiberg had four straight points during an 8-0 Husker run that turned a three-point deficit into a 69-64 lead with 14 seconds remaining.
The Cornhuskers (14-14, 7-10) had three players score in double figures, led by Walker, who had a career-high 23 points, seven rebounds, six assists and three blocks. Tominaga added 20 points - his fifth straight 20-point effort - and Sam Griesel chipped in as well with 12 points and two blocks.
Walker pulled down two offensive rebounds to lead the Nebraska offense which grabbed 10 boards and turned them into 13 second chance points.
The Nebraska defense held Maryland shooters to only 33.3 percent from the field. The Cornhuskers also kept Donta Scott to 2-of-16 shooting and five points in the game.
After falling behind 3-0, Nebraska went on a 7-0 run with 17:02 left in the first half, culminating in a three from Tominaga, to take a 7-3 lead. The Cornhuskers then added three points to that lead by the end of the period and entered halftime with a 31-24 advantage. Nebraska did most of its first half damage in the paint, scoring 22 of its 31 points close to the basket.
Maryland proceeded to take a 50-42 lead before Nebraska went on a 6-0 run to shrink the deficit to 50-48 with 4:26 to go in the contest. The Cornhuskers rally continued as they outscored Maryland 10-8 the rest of the way to tie it at 58-58 and send the game to overtime.
Maryland then snagged a 64-61 advantage with 2:23 left in the first overtime before Nebraska responded by going on an 8-0 run to seize a 69-64 lead with 14 seconds to go in the period. The Terrapins narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Cornhuskers still held on for the 70-66 win.
