FAIRBURY, Neb. -- The state's high court is offering no relief to a southeast Nebraska man convicted of killing a two-year-old.

The Nebraska Supreme Court Affirmed the conviction of Jake Gonzalez on Friday.

A Jefferson County Jury convicted Gonzales in intentional child abuse causing death and terroristic threats in October of 2021, related to the death of two-year-old Hollen Siedschlag.

The conviction stemmed from an incident in February of 2021. The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office responded to a welfare check at a Fairbury apartment building.

A woman showed deputies to her two-year-old son, who was lying face down in a closet with severe injuries. The boy later died at an Omaha hospital.

Gonzalez appealed his conviction, saying the District Court erred in their instructions to the jury, and should have moved the trial out of Jefferson County.

But the Supreme Court disagreed Friday, upholding Gonzalez's 70- to 80-year prison sentence.
