Tri County splits doubleheader with Falls City Sacred Heart
FALLS CITY, NE — The Tri County Trojans made the long trip down to Falls City Tuesday night and came out with a 1-1 record on the night against the Irish of Falls City Sacred Heart (FCSH).
FALLS CITY, NE — The Tri County Trojans made the long trip down to Falls City Tuesday night and came out with a 1-1 record on the night against the Irish of Falls City Sacred Heart (FCSH).
The Irish claimed the girls contest 59-33 while the Trojans won the boys game 52-46.
Tri County held a 4-2 lead in the opening minutes of the girls contest, but FCSH, the defending Class D2 State Champions, embarked on a 24-0 run to take control.
The Lady Trojans did go on a quick 7-0 run to respond, but still trailed 30-11 at the break.
Falls City Sacred Heart maintained control throughout the second half en route to the win. Jessica Wertenberger led all scorers with 19 points for the Irish. FCSH also got 12 points from Jentry Lechtenberg and 11 from Macy Keller.
Ellie Peters and Aubrey Siems paced Tri County with 9 points a piece.
In the boys contest, Carter Siems and Evan Keithley dominated the first half for their respective teams. Siems had 19 in the first and second quarters for Tri County. Keithley ended the opening 16 minutes with 16 points.
Tri County opened an 11-7 lead before Siems checked out with two first quarter fouls. The Irish took advantage and went on an 8-0 run to lead after the first 15-11. Keithley led the run, scoring 11 of FCSH's 15 points in the quarter.
With Siems back in to start the second period, Tri County scored seven in a row to take an 18-15 lead. The two went back-and-forth the rest of the half as Tri County held the 29-26 advantage at the break.
Caden Bales had a strong third quarter for the Trojans with seven points. His team led by that much after the third at 41-34.
The Trojans would expand the lead to as much as 11 in the fourth quarter before a late push by the Irish. Falls City Sacred Heart would come up short, however.
Next up for Tri County (girls 1-6, boys 6-1) are off until Dec. 29, when they'll begin play at the DGMT Holiday Tournament.
Falls City Sacred Heart (girls 5-2, boys 3-2) had their Thursday contest against Elmwood-Murdock postponed due to weather until January. The Irish's next contest is on Dec. 29, at the Freeman Holiday Tournament.
