BEATRICE – For the second day in a row, firefighters fought a rural blaze near Beatrice…as the tinder dry conditions continue.

Department personnel from Beatrice Rural Fire, the Filley Volunteer Fire Department and a unit from the Homestead National Historic Park were summoned to the fire, Monday at 1:10 p.m.  Filley fire brought a water truck to the scene, and some units were able to tap a hydrant near the Beatrice High School.

The flames spread from CRP ground to an area of trees, near South 51st and East Belvedere Road, which is about four miles east of Beatrice.

A cabin was located east of the fire, but according to officials at the scene, was not in immediate danger. Firefighters worked to keep flames from jumping a creek in that area.  In addition to fire units a front-end loader was brought to the scene to help move dirt or debris.

Firefighters fought the blaze from the north, as winds of 15 to 25 miles per hour pushed the fire southward.  Beatrice Rural Fire Chief Matt Langley says the fire burned about 35 to 40 acres of grass and woodland area.  Fire personnel were on the scene for over three hours.

Beatrice Rural Fire requested a state fire marshal investigator at the scene. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.  No burn permits had been issued for that area, according to Southeast Communications Center.
