Axtell dominates in win over rival Hanover to stay undefeated

AXTELL, KS — The defending 8-man Division II champion Axtell Eagles stayed undefeated in its quest for a repeat with a 62-14 win over the Hanover Wildcats.
Axtell finished with over 250 yards rushing with the team combining for 5 rushing scores.
Quarterback Isaac Detweiler led the way, rushing for 100 yards and 3 TDs on 14 carries. He also tossed three touchdowns on 9-12 passing for 158 yards.
Brandon Schmelzle was Detweiler's favorite target, hauling in seven catches for 135 yards and two touchdowns.
For Hanover, Rieken Stallbaumer finished 11-17 passing for 178 yards and two touchdowns. Camron Jueneman caught both scores and finished with a total of five catches for 117 yards.
In total, five different Wildcat receivers caught at least one ball.
Axtell jumped out to a quick 16-0 lead, scoring on its first two possessions. Each team would then add one touchdown before the end of the opening period. After one the Eagles led 24-6.
Hanover opened the scoring in the second quarter to cut the Eagles lead to 10 points at 24-14.
Axtell then took over, scoring four consecutive touchdowns to end the half while holding the Wildcats scoreless. The final two Eagles touchdown drives of the second quarter each only took one play.
By the half, Axtell led 56-14. After each team had one possession in the third, the Eagles lead expanded to 62-14. This triggered Kansas' 45-point mercy rule which ended the game.
Axtell (6-0) will host Frankfort next week. Hanover (2-4) will head home to take on Linn next Friday.
