LINCOLN, Neb. -- In the wake of the failure to get medical marijuana on the November ballot, one state senator said to expect the discussion to return to the floor of the Legislature this winter.

Sarpy County State Senator Jen Day announced on Monday that she plans to introduce legislation to legalize medical marijuana in the upcoming Legislative session.

Secretary of State Bob Evnen's office announced on Monday that the two medical marijuana ballot initiatives failed to qualify for the November ballot, with the number of signatures collected falling short of what was needed.

Day said this leaves many without an effective way to treat chronic pain and epileptic seizures.

Attempts to adopt medical cannabis have failed numerous times in Nebraska, most recently in 2018.

The 2023 Legislative session begins on Jan. 4.
