LPD: Two juveniles participate in viral social media challenge

The Lincoln Police Department said they were called to the Lincoln Children's Zoo parking lot on reported vandalism in progress.

LINCOLN, Neb. -- The Lincoln Police Department said they were called to the Lincoln Children's Zoo parking lot on reported vandalism in progress. 

When the officers arrived, they said they placed two juvenile males, a 13-year-old and a 15-year-old, into custody.

While investigating, officials said the two had taken apart a 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe’s ignition that was parked in the parking lot, to start the vehicle.  

According to authorities, one witness explained to the officers that they noticed the suspects recording themselves trying to steal the vehicle.

Both admitted to participating in a viral social media challenge and further admitted to a previous auto theft from July 9th, 2022.

Both juveniles were referred for possession of burglar's tools and theft by unlawful taking.
