Geneva claims National, PeeWee SFS Baseball championships

TOBIAS, NE — Geneva is two-for-two so far in SFS Baseball Championships in 2022.
Geneva Purple won both the National (15u) and PeeWee championships in the southeast Nebraska summer baseball league Wednesday evening.
In National League play, Geneva Purple defeated Plymouth A 4-3 in a tight back-and-forth contest that had drama right down to the finish.
Plymouth got off to a quick start, scoring three runs in the top of the first. They were aided by a trio of defensive errors by Geneva. In the bottom of the first, Geneva got one run back to make the score 3-1.
From there, the starting pitchers, Kiffin Theobald from Geneva and Zac Strein for Plymouth settled in, each striking out multiple hitters. Geneva though was able to break through in the third with an impressive two-out rally. Back-to-back-to-back hits followed by a wild pitch scored three runs for Geneva, putting them on top 4-3.
Preston Komenda came in to pitch in relief for Geneva Purple in the top of the fourth. He was in a jam with runners on first and third and nobody out. Komenda came up clutch, however, catching a line out and throwing to third before the runner could get back for a double play.
He struck out the next batter to end the inning.
Geneva threatened in the bottom of the fourth, but Plymouth reliever Cole Spahr kept them off the board to send the game to the fifth at 4-3.
Two quick outs in the fifth had Plymouth down to their final out of the five-inning championship game. A rally started, though, putting runners on second and third. Once again, Komenda came through on the mound, striking out the final batter to end the game.
Geneva Purple also won the SFS PeeWee Championship, beating Wilber Black 12-1 Wednesday.
The SFS American League (12u) championship is Thursday night. Geneva Purple will go for the sweep of the gold when they take on Exeter-Milligan at 7:45 p.m. You can listen to that game on Ol' Red 99.5 and online at olred995.com.
