LPD investigating handgun found near apartment

The Lincoln Police Department was called in for a handgun that was found laying on the ground.

LINCOLN, Neb. -- The Lincoln Police Department was called in for a handgun that was found laying on the ground.

According to authorities, officers were sent to an apartment complex in the 1400 block of Hilltop Road on a report of a found firearm at 1:15 p.m. on June 23.

The report said a resident of the apartment complex found a handgun laying on the ground near the complex and turned it into the office before contacting the police.

Officials said the officers found the handgun to be a loaded 9mm and are currently trying to determine who the owner is and how it ended up at the location.

LPD said they would like to stress the importance of immediately contacting the police if an unsecured firearm is ever found.

Authorities said for the safety of all involved, please do not attempt to handle or manipulate the firearm and instead to contact the police so the firearm can be safely collected and removed from the area.
