LINCOLN, NE — Nearly a week after eight women, including a state senator, accused Nebraska gubernatorial candidate Charles Herbster of sexual assault, a group of Republicans have published a letter in support of him.

Monday, Nebraska state senators Tom Brewer, of Gordon, Steve Halloran, of Hastings, and Steve Erdman, of Bayard, signed a letter asking Nebraskans to continue to support Herbster to be Nebraska's next governor.

Nineteen others, including various county GOP Chairs and former Omaha Mayor Hal Daub signed the letter.

In the letter, Herbster's supporters call the timing of the allegations, "very curious," and ask why it took the women nearly three years to make a public accusation.

They also call the accusations an attempted "character assassination" against Herbster and say it is a result of "cancel culture".

"It is unbelievable that this man would inappropriately touch any women, at any time, particularly in a crowded public setting," the letter reads. "We stand by and support Charles W. Herbster."

Herbster has faced fierce criticism since the allegations were made public in a report from the Nebraska Examiner last week. All 13 women serving in the Nebraska Legislature published a statement calling Herbster unfit to serve.

Nebraska Governor Pete Ricketts has also released a statement in support of the women who have accused Herbster. Ricketts has formally endorsed one of Herbster's opponents Jim Pillen for the office.

Herbster has vehemently denied the claims, calling them, "libelous."
