MARYSVILLE, KS - A sign of spring, and changing of the seasons, is Museum Day in Marysville, KS.
This Saturday, Museums and historical sites throughout Marshall County in Northeast Kansas will be free of admission and have a number of activities. Toby Carrig is the tourism director for the town.
“Saturday April 2 marks the opening for most of our museums here in Marysville and Marshall County for the season,” Carrig said. “The Pony Express Barn and Museum and the Koester House Museum will begin daily operations this weekend. It’s a celebration to kick off the year.”
Some of those activities and museums include a curator at the Koester House, horses and members of the Pony Express at the barn and museum, the Easter Bunny at the Union Pacific historical center, and a photo scavenger hunt at the Marshall County Courthouse.
Carrig explained how the idea for Museum Day came about.
“I think it was inspired by the Smithsonian Institute, they did a museum day at the national level,” Carrig said. “It’ll be an occasion that kicks off the tourism season where people can come to town and tour the different museums and places we have here in Marysville.”
Not only is it a time to kickoff tourism, but Carrig also says it’s a unique opportunity to learn about the history in northeast Kansas.
“It covers a wide array of history and has a wide range of activities,” Carrig said. “The Pony Express Barn dates back to the 1860’s, the Koester house to the 1870’s, and tells a different story about how Marysville developed in that time period of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.”
The event is all day Saturday, from 9:00 AM-5:00 PM.
