BEATRICE – Gage County officials Wednesday honored a man who served his country during the Vietnam War.  The recognition for Alvin Huls is part of an ongoing program of the Gage County Board to recognize the armed services contributions of local residents.

Huls enlisted in the U.S Air Force in January, of 1964 at age 19, and was discharged four years later, earning several medals.  He also later served in the Army National Guard, is a past commander of the Beatrice American Legion Post, and is still active with the organization.

Huls served during the Vietnam War in Tactical Air Command.

"I went to Phan Rang, Vietnam....and we had the F-100 Super Sabres and the F-4 Phantoms. I had a brief tour in the Philippines...came back to the United States to Shaw Air Force Base, and that's where It took my discharge. And, I want to thank everybody for recognizing me....because I sure wasn't recognized when I came back from Vietnam....I can tell ya."

Veterans are presented with a plaque and some small gifts by the Gage County Board to show appreciation for service to their country, and their home county.
