BEATRICE – The City of Beatrice has received a foundation award that helps with the expense of upgrading the Chief Standing Bear Trailhead area.
Members of the Gage County Foundation Board made a presentation before the Mayor and City Council, in celebration of the foundation’s 40th year of existence.
Foundation Board President Don Vetrovsky said members saw a presentation by the city’s public properties director about the plans for the trailhead located off South 6th.

"I'm very pleased that the board took that challenge on and that we, as a foundation over forty years, grew to where we can give back to the community. We'd like to present a check to the City of Beatrice for $50,000...for the project there at the Standing Bear Trail. We appreciate it. We've been by there a number of times, and it really is shaping up to be a nice addition to the city...and we're proud to be a part of it."

Also attending the council meeting was Gage County Foundation Treasurer William Cook, Jr. and board member Greg Leech.

The City of Beatrice built an all-weather restroom facility this year next to the Chief Standing Bear Trail shelter that tells the story of the Ponca Tribe…and reworked the ground, seeding it with grass late this year.

Plans are to install a hard-surfaced parking area at the trailhead.
