Luella Emma Ehle was born in Gladstone on January 18th, 1919. Her parents were Ida and Ernest Aude. She grew up in rural Gladstone with her brother Ernest and sister Ruth, where she raised turkeys. She was baptized at Zion Evangelical Reform Church and was the first high school graduate of her family, at Fairbury High School, living with various families to make it happen.
Luella met Raymond C. Ehle at the Bruning Air Force Base. They married on March 31, 1946 at Zion Church. Because of Raymond’s machinist job, they moved back to Brooklyn, New York. They settled down in Queens, where they raised their family – Kathleen, Marilyn, and Raymond. She sewed and cared for her family, and came back to Gladstone every summer to visit relatives.
After her husband passed away, Luella moved back to Gladstone. She was a fabric supervisor at Kellwood/Swingsters, and then worked at Walmart, where she was a cashier until 2013. She was one of the original employees of the first Walmart in Nebraska, even getting the opportunity to shake Mr. Sam Walton’s hand.
She retired at the age of 93. After retiring, she liked to garden, crochet, bake apple pies, and visit with family and friends. She collected barbies, loved her poodles, and enjoyed coffee and ice cream.
She is survived by her daughter Marilyn Mattfeld and husband William of Schuyler; son-in-law Frank Filipi of Friend; son Raymond Ehle and wife Cindy of Fairbury; and grandchildren Denise King of Lincoln, Craig Filipi of Crete, Frank and Tina Filipi of Friend, Allison Vossler of Lincoln, Christine and Tim Harper of Youngstown, PA, Scott Mattfeld of Salida, CO, Stephanie Mattfeld of Schuyler, Katherine Ehle of Elkhorn, Margaret and Ethan Renner of Kearney; and eleven great-grandchildren, as well as many nieces, nephews, and special friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond, in 1967;  sister baby Aude; sister Ruth; brother Ernest; sister-in-law Gertrude, and daughter Kathleen.
Services and burial for Luella will be Tuesday, August 13, at 10:30 a.m. at Zion Countryside Church in Gladstone. The family will be holding a visitation at Gerdes Meyer on Monday, August 12 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Memorials will go to Zion Countryside Church and American Cancer Society.
