NORFOLK, Neb. — Former University of Nebraska System President Ted Carter has resigned as president of The Ohio State University after disclosing what the school described as an inappropriate relationship.

Ohio State officials said Monday the university’s Board of Trustees accepted Carter’s resignation after he disclosed an inappropriate relationship with someone seeking public resources to support her personal business.

According to the university, Carter disclosed the situation to trustees and offered to step down.

“The board appreciates the president’s contributions to the university over the last two years,” the university said in a statement, pointing to work on Ohio State’s Education for Citizenship 2035 strategic plan, growing research funding and new scholarship programs.

Carter also released a statement acknowledging his decision to leave the role.

“For personal reasons, I have made the difficult decision to resign from my role as president of The Ohio State University,” Carter said.

He said he informed the board that he “made a mistake in allowing inappropriate access to Ohio State leadership.”

“I believe we have made much progress during my time at Ohio State, and I’m sorry I’m not able to remain your president longer,” Carter said.

Carter submitted a resignation letter dated March 7 to Board of Trustees Chairman John Zeiger, saying his resignation would take effect immediately.

“I am grateful for my time at Ohio State and appreciate the board’s understanding,” Carter wrote in the letter.

Carter previously served as president of the University of Nebraska system before leaving the role in 2023 to become Ohio State’s president.
