LIBERTY, Neb. -- Firefighters responded to a fire in a field east of Liberty in southeast Nebraska on Thursday.

Barneston Rural Volunteer Fire Department was called to the blaze at 5:47 p.m. near Highway 8 and the Gage County line. According to Fire Chief Taylor McHenry, firefighters determined the fire was located 1 mile south and a half mile east of that location in Pawnee County.

McHenry says the fire was under control and being supervised. McHenry says the attendee had worked the soil around the area being burnt to keep it contained, using a bulldozer to do so. Firefighters were requested by the attendee to not extinguish the fire. They were also informed that their brush trucks would likely be unable to access the area.

Barneston Fire then requested that the Summerfield (Kan.) Volunteer Fire Department be advised that the fire was in their district, remaining on the scene until their arrival.
