OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) - A man is dead after a pursuit early Thursday involving the Nebraska State Patrol and the Omaha Police Department.

In an update from NSP, authorities would like the public to know that the man died of “an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound” following the pursuit.

The incident began when a trooper performed a traffic stop on westbound I-80 near 96th Street at about 1:30 a.m. Thursday, NSP says.

The driver of the vehicle, a Ford F-150 pickup, fled the traffic stop westbound and was later driving northbound on Interstate 680. OPD’s Able 1 helicopter joined the pursuit and stop sticks were deployed to slow the vehicle.

“Just after the vehicle passed Blair High Road, still traveling on I-680, the driver began firing multiple shots out the driver’s side window,” NSP said in the update.

The chase ended when the pickup crashed into a tree in the backyard of a residence near North 88th and Sunrise Streets. OPD officers and additional troopers were called to establish a perimeter.

The driver was later taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries that he died from, NSP says. No other injuries were reported.

According to authorities, the pursuit lasted about 10 minutes. No troopers or officers fired shots at any point during the incident.

The Nebraska State Patrol, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, and the Omaha Police Department are investigating.
