KIMBALL -- The Clean Harbors Housing Development is moving forward, as the model homes are now open for viewing and people can lock in the lot they would like to purchase.

Clean Harbors hosted an open house a few weeks ago which attracted 20-25 people with seven actively interested in moving forward.

The next open houses will be Friday May 2 from 1 – 6 p.m. and Saturday May 3 from 9 a.m. - 2 p.m.

As News Channel Nebraska previously reported, the single-family housing project will consist of 120 lots open to everyone in Kimball.

There are currently 14 lots available to purchase with plans for more to be available in the future.

The project will continue over the next several years as the demand increases.

“This is just phase one; the backland way to the west probably won't be developed for another 5-7 years in a later phase,” said Senior Vice President of Facility Engineering Paul Whiting. “The next phase will probably be in 2026; assuming these all sell out, we will probably go another 15-20. It’s all going to be demand-driven.”

Whiting said there are some engineering plans to complete on drainage and utilities, which he hopes will be done in the next 30 days. After which, they will need to go through three public hearings for final approval of the site plans.

“We’ve had a preliminary hearing and there weren’t any issues with that," Whiting said. "The city is behind the whole project, so I don’t expect any problems, but it is part of the process."

People interested in purchasing a house will have a choice between two housing models. The two-bedroom, two-bath house will be 1,200 sq/ft, and the four-bed, 2-bath house will be 1,800 sq/ft. Each model will also have a full unfinished basement that will have two egress windows to allow bedrooms to be built. Each one will have an attached single-car garage.

Clean Harbors employees who sign a four-year contract with the company will receive a discount on the lot and additional perks when buying one of the houses.

Whiting said the plots of land will be available to the public to purchase in the mid $50,000’s.

For community members who are interested in a house, you would need to meet with one of the local housing factories where you will go through the different options and pick which house plan you would like, then the factory will give a final quote. From there, you would need to find a general contractor to then secure a construction loan through whatever bank you choose.

The building process is roughly 6-8 weeks from when you commit to the factory to when the house is installed on the property.
