ARTHUR, Neb. – Crews from across western Nebraska responded to a grass fire Friday afternoon along Highway 61 in Arthur County, as fire danger remains elevated across the region.

The Arthur Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched at 1:17 p.m. and quickly requested mutual aid from surrounding departments to help contain the blaze. Agencies from Keystone-Lemoyne, Whitman, Sandhills, McPherson, Ogallala and several others responded alongside law enforcement and emergency management teams.

Support also came from the Arthur County Roads Department, Nebraska Department of Transportation, Nebraska State Patrol and sheriff’s offices from Keith County and Arthur County.

The fire department expressed gratitude for the swift action and hard work from all involved, including local ranchers and volunteers who aided in the response.

Officials reminded the public that fire season is just beginning, and conditions remain dangerous due to dry fuels and gusty winds.

“We urge everyone to call 911 immediately if a fire is spotted,” the department said in a statement. “This is the fastest way to ensure all needed resources are dispatched.”

Authorities also asked residents to avoid emergency scenes and fire halls during active incidents, emphasizing that bystanders and blocked roadways can delay response times and create safety hazards.

The cause of the fire and the total acreage affected have not yet been released.
