BEATRICE – Beatrice City Street crews have been making repairs near the West Court Street bridge, to solve a problem of water seeping below the concrete where a deep catch basin was installed.   The work is being done at the entrance to a watercraft launch area on the river.

Street Superintendent Jason Moore says the below surface area apparently wasn’t compacted well enough when a concrete box was installed previously.

Moore says the problem was discovered when officials observed a hole in the concrete at a crosswalk area.  The box underneath the concrete that helps drain water to the Big Blue River is about twelve feet deep in that area.

Water underneath the pavement has begun to erode an area about eleven feet long.   Moore says crews ripped out the concrete at the entrance to a river access and eventually will fill the void with a concrete mix.

Because street crew members are attending a conference on mosquito spraying updates this week, he expects the project by the river should be poured and the repairs complete, around the middle of next week.

Meanwhile, the Beatrice Area Solid Waste Landfill administration building sustained some roof damage, from thunderstorm winds late Sunday night or early Monday morning.

Moore says a roofing company was completing work to repair past hail damage, when high winds ripped some of the tin roof from the west side of the building.   That allowed rain to soak insulation, which fell inside the building.   Moore says there was no damage to any equipment inside….and repairs are being made.
