FAIRBURY, Neb. -- January was National Mentoring Month and mentors in the Fairbury’s Teammates Program were honored for that.

Residents who mentor students were brought to the court at halftime of the Fairbury girl's varsity game against Johnson County Central to be recognized.

“But, we just wanted to have some good publicity and get our mentors out in front of a lot of fans and they got a nice recognition that night,” said Jill Davis, the Fairbury Teammates Program coordinator.

The program provides an opportunity for students and mentors to meet for 30 minutes every week and develop a role model like relationship.

“Teammates is a mentoring program that matches an adult with a student and it’s to inspire students to become the best that they can be and positively influence them,” Davis said.

Davis emphasized the importance of the program not only in Fairbury but all around the country.

“It’s very important, because all kids, no matter if they are at risk or if they’re just your general student, but all students can use a positive adult influence in their life,” Davis said.

In order to become a mentor, you can reach out to Jill Davis or call 402-729-6104. You can also go online to apply and the program will provide training for new mentors.
