BEATRICE – A resolution changing the City of Beatrice one-and-six-year road and street improvement plan has been approved by local elected officials.
City Administrator Tobias Tempelmeyer says the change relates to a request by the owner of a new convenience and fueling station…a U-Stop Store….at U.S. Highway 136 and East Scott Street.

"The state has indicated his best option is for the city to make a request on his behalf. We've contacted the State of Nebraska. What they are requesting is that we amend our one-and-six-year street plan...show this on there....and then they will take a look at it. The district one engineer has looked at it and given his initial approval to it. We amend the plan, they submit it back to the state...they have a committee that will then look at it. The committee will make a decision on whether they want to move forward with it."

If state approval is given for an entrance and exit along the highway, the city and developer would discuss financing arrangements. Following a public hearing Monday night, the city council approved the road and street plan amendment, on a 5-0 vote…with three council members absent from the meeting.

In other action, the council approved a lease of city-owned property with operators of a tire business just south of Cortland, P-K Management LLC. Tempelmeyer says the arrangement involves Homestead Trail property which the city owns, between Beatrice and Cortland. "They had contacted the city about leasing a portion of our property so that they can store some materials."

The lease approved by the city council with the company is for 20-years, starting at an annual payment of $1,710…increasing three percent each year after.
"They have to keep their stuff five feet off of the trail. There's a road in there where the right-of-way gets pretty narrow. We got that number for rent because it's the same number we charged the Co-op...for a similar lease on some ground along the trail system as well....around Pickrell."

A resolution putting in place the lease of property was approved by the city council, 5-0.
