LINCOLN, Neb. -- An 84-year-old man serving time in prison for attempted sexual assault of a child has died.

According to the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services, Donald Lichtenberg died at a Lincoln hospital on Saturday. He had been housed at NDCS's Reception and Treatment Center.

Lichtenberg’s sentence began on October 20, 2021. He was serving an 18- to 24-year sentence for attempted first degree sexual assault of a child out of Douglas County.

While the cause of death has not yet been determined, Lichtenberg was being treated for a medical condition, according to NDCS spokesperson Dayne Urbanovsky.

As is the case whenever an inmate dies in NDCS custody, a grand jury will conduct an investigation.
