Nebraska holding drill Wednesday as part of Severe Weather Awareness Week
BEATRICE – Nebraska is holding a statewide severe weather awareness drill Wednesday morning, a test weather warning at 10:00 a.m. CT/9:00 a.m. MT.
It’s all part of Severe Weather Awareness Week in Nebraska. The National Weather Service and Nebraska Emergency Management has been focusing on different weather hazards, each day of this week.
This is the time of the year Nebraska will be getting into the height of its tornado season….generally April and May.
Tornadoes and other severe weather, however, can strike at any time. Areas of the southern U.S. have already been hit hard by tragic storms, including tornadoes….that have cost lives and injured many.
In 2022, Nebraska reported 26 tornadoes…..10 of them occurring in April…..6 in May….and 9 in June. One twister was recorded in July. There were no deaths, but two injuries.
Last year, the strongest tornado was an EF-2 rated twister, June 14th….in York County. Otoe and Harlan Counties had the most tornadoes last year…..three in each county.
