Man arrested after reportedly stabbing woman, Uber driver
LINCOLN, Neb. -- The Lincoln Police Department said Thursday that it arrested a man after he reportedly stabbed a woman and an Uber driver.
LPD said around 10 p.m. on Wednesday, officers were dispatched to the area of Normal Boulevard and Myrtle St. for a report of nature unknown.
The caller reportedly told officers that they were waived down by a woman with an obvious cut to her wrist and was crying.
When officers arrived, they said they found a 19-year-old woman who reported that she was getting off work in the area of 48th and Van Dorn, when a man she knew, 39-year-old Manuel Jesus Cevallos Mendez, came out from behind a tree with a knife.
LPD said the woman reported fleeing to an arriving Uber, that she had called to give her a ride home.
The woman said she entered the car, locked the doors and told the driver to leave.
Officials said Mendez was close to the car and started to stab the 43-year-old Uber driver in the face and stomach, through the driver's window.
LPD said Mendez then tried to stab the woman, who was in the backseat.
The woman reported that she deflected those attempts, but got a cut to her hand.
The driver then accelerated through the lot, with Mendez hanging onto the car, according to police.
Authorities said that the Uber then struck the dumpster with enough force to deploy the airbags, and reportedly disarming Mendez who was clinging to the vehicle.
LPD said that the woman exited the care and fled to 48th and Normal for help. Mendez fled the scene.
Mendez was found about an hour later, after he called for help relating to the injuries he got in the collision, according to officials.
All of the people mentioned were taken to an area hospital, according to authorities, for non-life-threatening injuries.
At the hospital, LPD said Mendez was identified by authorities.
After being medically cleared, Mendez was lodged in jail for first-degree assault, second-degree domestic assault, and use of a weapon to commit a felony.
