A southeast Nebraska mayor has taken down his opponent in the 2022 primary election for Public Service Commissioner.

Geneva Mayor Eric Kamler defeated incumbent Rod Johnson in Tuesday' election for the District 4 seat on the Nebraska Public Service Commission. Kamler received 57.5 percent of the vote as over 31,600 people cast their ballots for him compared to 23,400 for Johnson.

Much of Kamler's campaign focused on his accomplishments as the Mayor of Geneva, particularly the expansion of broadband and high speed internet and how he could bring the service to more of the state as Public Service Commissioner.

He also attacked Johnson for not being "present" as a Public Service Commissioner. Radio ads from Kamler hit hard on Johnson's attendance record at Public Service Commissioner meetings. According to Kamler's campaign, he ran over 3,300 radio ads on 11 radio stations within the district.

"I am and forever will be grateful to the voters who have elected me as the Republican nominee to this tremendous responsibility to serve as the next Public Service Commissioner representing 1/5 of the State of Nebraska," Kamler wrote on his campaign's Facebook page after Tuesday's election.

District 4 on the Public Service Commission covers 31 counties in eastern Nebraska, stretching from the Kansas border in southeast Nebraska to the South Dakota and Iowa borders in northeast Nebraska.

Kamler runs unopposed in the general election as no candidates from any other party filed for the position.
