FAIRBURY, NE — A radio station and their listeners in southeast Nebraska stepped up big time to help in the battle against childhood cancer.

Ol' Red 99.5 in Fairbury wrapped up its St. Jude Children's Hospital radiothon Thursday. When all was said and done, the fundraiser brought in $73,168 over the two day event. It's most the annual event has raised since 2019.

Staff from the station were live on air for 12-hours on Wednesday and Thursday encouraging people to sign up.

Fairbury Station Manager Trevor Steinmeyer was ecstatic with the support the community showed.

"I don't know how many times I looked from where I'm sitting [in the studio] and saw just random people bringing in donations or little kids bringing in their allowance for the week," he said. "It's really really cool to see all the support we get from our communities around here in southeast Nebraska and north central Kansas."

St. Jude Children's Hospital has been fighting to find cures and treating kids with cancer for 60 years. The organization prides itself on not passing on any expenses to the families they work with. Instead, they rely on donations.

With this year's total, Ol' Red 99.5 and its listeners have now raised $426,421 for St. Jude since 2016.
