DEWITT, NE — Illness is shutting down classes at part of one southeast Nebraska school district for the second week in a row.

Tri County County Schools near DeWitt announced that the district’s secondary school will be closed on Wednesday and Thursday. Tri County Elementary School classes were called off last Tuesday and Wednesday.

Superintendent Randy Schlueter says 34 percent of secondary students were absent on Tuesday with a variety of illnesses and there aren’t enough substitute teachers to fill positions of absent staff. The district will make a decision on Thursday afternoon about reopening the school for Friday.

“The inconvenience is frustrating but the safety and learning is most important for students and staff,” Schlueter said in an email to parents.

All school activities will continue as planned but could be changed.
