Geneva native Maggie Malone qualifies for Olympics, sets US Trials record

EUGENE, OR - A southeast Nebraska native is breaking records on the way to qualifying for the Olympics.
Fillmore Central graduate and Geneva native Maggie Malone won the US Olympic Trials women's javelin throw with a toss of 63.5 meters over the weekend. The winning throw was also a US trials record by two meters.
The victory secures Malone's spot on her second-straight Olympic roster. Malone set an American record in May with a javelin throw of 66.82 meters. That distance is the third best in the world this year.
Five years ago she won the NCAA championship for Texas A&M back to back with the Olympic trials, but didn't qualify for the final in Rio.
"That was the first time I ever competed internationally. I had no idea what to expect," Malone told a reporter with the Team USA website. "This time I feel more confident in what I've done all season and I know if I execute as I have all season it's going to be a great outcome."
