UPDATE (1/30 4:15 p.m.) - Fremont Public Schools has issued a follow-up statement. School officials say they reminded staff in advance of the protest to remain nonpartisan in conversations with students. The statement said that students who participated in the walkout were marked with an unverified absence and parents were notified.

UPDATE (1/30 2:45 p.m.) - The Dodge County Attorney's Office issued a news release acknowledging the situation but declining to make a statement or announce any possible charges.

"The Dodge County Attorney's Office takes this situation very seriously and as such is reviewing all available evidence prior to making either an official statement or a charging decision. The Dodge County Attorney's Office is currently working together with the relevant law enforcement in order to make informed decisions about how to best handle this matter for the people of Dodge County."

FREMONT, Neb. — Police have located the driver of the vehicle that hit an anti-ICE protester outside of Fremont High School.

Fremont Police issued the update on Friday morning. According to the news release, officers found the boy, who is a juvenile. The release didn’t contain any other information aside from pledging an investigation.

“Appropriate charges will be determined at the completion of the investigation,” the release said.

Fremont Public Schools issued a statement Thursday evening saying that a non-school-sponsored, student-led demonstration started around 2:00 p.m. School administrators were supervising with the goal of ensuring that students were safe and peaceful.

An NCN reporter was on scene and witnessed the incident around 2:30 p.m. A red SUV with a Trump flag on the back drove by the protest multiple times. On the final pass, the boy parked the SUV in front of the school, got out of the vehicle and exchanged words with the protesters. He then got back into the SUV, revved the engine and drove forward.

A female student was in the street and holding a sign. A video from a witness shows the girl moving toward the vehicle. While she was still several feet away, the driver accelerated and hit the protester, knocking her to the side. The driver stopped briefly as a school administrator approached, then drove away from the scene. It’s unclear if the driver saw the girl.

Police and paramedics responded to the school. The girl was loaded into an ambulance on a stretcher and transported to a hospital. She was alert, talking and smiling while interacting with first responders.

Students and others continued the protest after the incident.
