Nebraska Medicine sues to block $800M Board of Regents deal with Clarkson
LINCOLN, Neb. — Nebraska Medicine is suing the University of Nebraska Board of Regents over a $800 million deal with Clarkson Regional Health Services.
The lawsuit comes after the board of regents approved the proposal Thursday to allow Clarkson to fully acquire Nebraska Medicine, ending a 30-year partnership. Nebraska Medicine is now trying to stop that deal from moving forward.
In a press release, Nebraska Medicine called the lawsuit a necessary, but unfortunate step to take since the initial annulment of the deal two weeks ago.
Current and former Nebraska Medicine leaders have raised concerns about the deal calling it a "state takeover." University President Dr. Jeffery Gold said that nothing will change at Nebraska medicine and that the university cannot legally block the deal because of a 2016 agreement that gave Clarkson the right to withdraw.
The Board of Regents responded to the Lawsuit saying the were "saddened and puzzled by this unnecessary action.”
Clarkson Regional Health said it remains committed to collaboration. “Clarkson and the University have repeatedly made it clear that the preference and hope was to collaborate with Nebraska Medicine toward a solution that would grow and strengthen heath care in Nebraska," the company said.
