John David Focken

John David Focken, 76, of Cook, passed away peacefully on March 1, 2025, at St. Elizabeth's Medical Center in Lincoln. He was born on October 4, 1948, in Beatrice, Nebraska, to Lawrence and Pearl (Vlasak) Focken. He grew up near Walton, Nebraska, and his family moved to a farm near Douglas, Nebraska, during his childhood. He graduated from Douglas High School.
After attending Milford Technical College, he served in the United States Army. He was a Specialist and forward observer in the Vietnam War from September 1969 to October 1970, earning two Bronze Stars for heroism in combat, a war commendation medal for outstanding achievement, and an Army good conduct medal for exemplary behavior, efficiency, and fidelity during his service.
John married Maxine Hauptmeier on January 8, 1972, at St John Lutheran Church in Sterling Nebraska, and they were married for 53 years. They raised a family in Sterling where he owned and ran a automotive shop. They built a house near Cook, where John farmed and built a new shop. He continued to work in the shop with his son until his retirement. John was an active member of the Deer Creek Sodbusters and ran the sawmill at their annual antique machinery show for many years.
He was a beloved husband, father, and grandfather, and a loyal friend to many. He was known as a skilled mechanic and for his sense of humor. He was particularly proud of his children and grandsons. He will be deeply missed.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers Sam and Robert. He is survived by his wife Maxine; children, Shelia (Rick) and Gerald (Julie); grandchildren, Kobe Wilken and Henry Smith; siblings Judi Schmidt, Joyce Blackwell, June Focken (Carol), Russell Focken, and Rosalie (Andy) Beliel; and many nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be at 1:00 P.M. on Tuesday, March 11, 2025, at the North St. John Lutheran Cemetery near Sterling with Pastor Doyle Karst officiating. Military rites will be conducted by Harm Sangen Post #140 of the American Legion of Sterling and the Nebraska Army National Guard. The family requests casual attire. Cremation has taken place and there will be no viewing.
